Despite a thrilling 29-27 opening set victory, the Dean College Bulldogs were defeated on the road by Nichols College, falling 3-1 in non-league action in Dudley, Mass. on Thursday.

Dean took the opening set in a back and forth affair in which neither side led by more than three points. Sadie Homer (North Easton, Mass.) finished the set for the Bulldogs with a service ace to preserve the 29-27 win.

The two teams split the first ten points of the second set, before Nichols kicked open a 5-5 game with a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. Two Bulldog timeouts later, the lead had swelled to 16-8, before Dean scored two straight to close the gap to 16-10.  After Nichols again surged ahead, the Bulldogs closed to 23-16 but could get no closer, as the Bison prevailed 25-16.

Nichols jumped on the Bulldogs in set three, starting with a 9-2 lead before extending it to 12-4 in the early going. The Bison extended their lead to 21-9 before Dean rattled off four straight to close the gap to 21-13.  Nichols responded with four straight to finish off the set and take a 2-1 lead.

Set four was tightly contested out of the gate, with both teams sparring for points in the early moments. Nichols broke open the stalemate with six out of seven points to take an 18-12 lead, and later stretched their advantage to 21-12.  Dean would not go quietly, however, as they scored the next six points to narrow the deficit to 21-19, forcing a Nichols timeout.

The Bison bounced back, scoring the next four points to seal the game and the match.

Kait Anderson
(Clinton, Conn.) posted a monster double-double, registering 17 kills and 10 digs to lead the Bulldogs with 22 points.  Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) added six kills and 20 digs, while Amanda Payne (Millis, Mass.) chipped in 14 dogs.  Homer provided 25 assists.

The Bulldogs travel to Massachusetts Maritime on Monday for a 7:00 non-league tilt.
