Bulldogs Earn A Split in Tri-Match

THE LEAD:
Dean dropped the opener of Saturday's tri-match, falling in straight sets to Simmons on Anna Maria's homecourt in Paxton, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean scored the first two points of the opening set, and the contest was tight at the outset.  Simmons settled in mid-way through and took control, scoring 13 of the final 14 points and galloping to a 25-10 set win.

Simmons scored the first seven points of set two and never looked back.  The Bulldogs mounted a small rally late, but it was not enough and Simmons handled the set 25-6.

Dean opened set three with fire, battling to a 6-4 lead in the early going.  Simmons rifled back, scoring the next nine points to earn a commanding 13-6 lead.  The Bulldogs closed the gap to 13-9 before a late spurt from Simmons put the game and the match away. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) led the Bulldogs with six kills while also adding six digs.  Nicole Defosses (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added seven assists and Samantha Trullo (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in two kills and five digs.

THE LEAD:
Dean rebounded in match two, dominating the host Amcats for a 3-0 straight straight victory to salvage a Saturday split.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
With the first set tied at 10, Dean ripped off nine consecutive points to gain a stranglehold on momentum. The Bulldogs made quick work of the hosts down the stretch and a Rios-Nevarez kill capped the 25-13 opening game victory.

Dean closed set two on a 9-3 run, breaking open a close game to win 25-14.

Dean jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set three, but the Amcats came storming back.  Anna Maria broke a six-six tie to take the lead and eventually swelled their advantage to 15-12. Dean responded with an impressive run to take a 24-20 lead.  The hosts would not go quietly, scoring the next four points to tie the game before Dean scored the final two to finish the match. 


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
A balanced attack powered the Bulldogs to victory.  Rios-Nevarez led the way with eight kills while also adding nine digs.  Defosses paced the Dean attack with 13 assists, and added seven digs.  Tori Maynard (Millville, Mass.) supplied seven kills for the victors while Trullo pitched in six.
