THE LEAD:
In one of the highest scoring games in recent memory, Dean College couldn't catch host Southern Vermont and the Mountaineers held on for a 23-15 victory in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In less than ten minutes, Southern Vermont took a 5-1 lead after back-to-back goals from Vanessa Kendall.

The Bulldogs got back on the board when Lauryn Wilks (Hartford, Conn.) and Genesis Johnson (Norwalk, Conn.) recorded consecutive tallies for Dean to make it 5-3.

SVC ran off three straight goals until a Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.) score stopped the streak but the Mountaineers netted three more to jump in front 11-4 before settling for a 12-5 halftime edge.

Dean opened the half on fire with Makayla Fisher (Irvington, N.J.) and Johnson finding the back of the net but once again, Southern Vermont registered three more until another Romero and Fisher scored goals less than 40 seconds apart to get within six at 15-9.

The Mountaineers tallied four straight goals to widen the gap, but the Bulldogs didn't go away as Johnson, Fisher and Wilks all registered markers to inch back closer.

Dean got scores from Fisher and two more from Wilks before the game ended.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Alex Safford
finished with nine goals and three assists for Mountaineers while Brittany Fulton totaled three goals and an assist.

Johnson ended the game with a career-best five goals and an assist for Dean, who got four goals from both Fisher and Wilks.

Makayla Handley (Lynn, Mass.), making her first career start in goal, made nine saves for the Cardinal and White.
