New England College went on a game-changing 9-0 run late in the fourth quarter and the visiting Pilgrims escaped with a 73-65 win over Dean College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Playing in front of a crowd that featured mostly Dean College's faculty and staff, the Bulldogs grabbed a 57-55 lead when Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) converted a conventional three-point play with 4:43 left.
Dean, however, went more than three minutes without a basket during the New England College game-sealing run.
Now down 67-60, Iindia Pina (Carver, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer to cut the Pilgrims' lead to four with 1:33 to play, but NEC reserve Jaz Laracuente knocked down a three-pointer as the shot clock wore down on their next possession to keep the Bulldogs at bay and put the game out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Pilgrims shot 50 percent from the field for the contest, including 53 percent in the fourth quarter when they outscored Dean 27-17.
NEC also controlled the interior, holding a 46-38 edge on the glass and a 54-34 advantage on points in the paint.
Pina led all scorers with 27 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.) added 16 points, five rebounds and four steals of her own.
Kayla Gooding racked up a monster double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds on an extremely efficient 10-for-12 shooting. Laracuente, meanwhile, chipped in with 16 points and seven assists.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, January 10 when they visit Becker College for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
