Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.) scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to rally Dean College to a thrilling 75-66 win over Simmons College in non-league women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
The game was a back and forth affair that saw the visiting Sharks finish the game with just four players on the court after their four other players fouled out and Bulldog lead guard Iindia Pina (Carver, Mass.) play all 45 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean, who entered the contest having won back-to-back games for the first time this season, looked to be well on their way to their third after Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.) outscored Simmons herself, 12-9, in the first quarter as the Bulldogs built a ten point lead.
That advantage evaporated quickly with Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) scoring nine points in the second stanza for Simmons, while Dean struggled offensively, going just 4-for-17 from the field and committing five turnovers. When the dust settled, the Sharks were holding a 31-29 halftime edge.
The Sharks maintained their lead throughout the third quarter and when Francesca Corsinetti (Johnston, R.I.) dropped in a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, Simmons had a 55-45 edge with less than eight minutes left to play.
Dean slowly began chipping away at the deficit but more than three minutes later the Sharks were still ahead by nine following a short jumper from Suzie Cosme (Framingham, Mass.).
In a little more than two minutes, however, the game was tied at 60-60 after Jamaya Cleveland (Greensboro, Ga.) scored inside and Rudder finished on the interior on consecutive possessions and then stepped out behind the arc and connected on the game-tying triple with 1:51 to go.
Each team made a single free throw the rest of regulation to send the game into an extra session all even at 62-62.
Rudder put the Bulldogs in front to stay with the first six points of overtime and even when Corsinetti drilled another three-pointer, Pina went to the line and made four free throws to seal the win for Dean.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Bulldogs forced 38 Simmons turnovers which they converted into 35 points, but the Sharks dominated the glass, holding a 62-38 edge.
In addition to her 23 points, Rudder added seven rebounds and five steals, while Pina totaled 20 points, ten rebounds and six steals.
Cleveland came really close to recording a triple double as she racked up nine points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Romero, meanwhile, ended with a career-best 18 points.
Stapelfeld collected a team-best 17 points, five rebounds and four steals for Simmons, who also got 16 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks and six assists from Molly Phillips (Cranston, R.I.).
Dean is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Bridgewater State for a 5:30 PM start.
