THE LEAD:
Led by dominant performances from senior Iindia Pina (Carver, Mass.) and freshman Makayla Rudder (Springfield, Mass.), the Dean College Bulldogs got back in the win column, knocking off non conference opponent Johnson & Wales 61-56 on Thursday night in Providence, R.I.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean took control late in the first half after back and forth action opened the game.  Leading 20-15 after one frame, the Bulldogs scored 11 of the first 16 second quarter points, stretching their advantage to 11 on a three pointer from Amanda Miressi (New Rochelle, N.Y.) with just over minutes remaining in the half.

A counter attack from JWU closed the gap to two with a minute remaining before Pina converted an offensive rebound into a second chance basket and put the Bulldogs on top 35-31 heading into the break.

Back to back layups from senior Nicole Romero (Winchendon, Mass.) extended the Bulldogs lead to nine midway through the third quarter, and a three pointer from Pina extended the lead even more, giving the Bulldogs their biggest lead (50-36) with 2:21 to play in the third quarter.

The Wildcats refused to fold, wittling the 14 point deficit down to six as the clock dipped under eight minutes to play in the final period.  The teams traded hoops throughout the middle part of the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs were able to maintain a two score lead throughout by virtue of timely free throw shooting from Rudder and Pina.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Pina and Rudder both played 38 minutes and put up gaudy numbers.  Pina finished with 14 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 steals. Rudder knotched a double-double, scoring 20 and posting 10 rebounds. Romero added a season-high 14 points while pitching in five rebounds.

Dean shot 30% from the field while the Wildcats finished at 41%.  The key differential came at the free throw line, where Dean finished 16-28 while JWU shot 2-4. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the hosts 50-38 and doubled them up 26-12 in points off turnovers.
