Visiting Emerson College got a balanced effort from a its offensive attack and used a strong service game to register a 3-0 win over Dean College in non-league men's volleyball action on Thursday evening.
The win for the Lions pushes their record to 2-1, while the Bulldogs suffer a loss in their season opener.
Mark Piorkowski led all players with 12 kills and his performance on the serve – he posted eight service aces – were half of his team's total.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Emerson raced out to an early lead in the opening set on their way to a 25-11 triumph as they notched 13 kills in the frame, while hitting .360.
That hitting percentage jumped to .435 in the second set as the Lions got three straight service aces from Piorkowski to build a 15-3 edge before eventually settling for a 25-8 win.
Dean was extremely competitive in the final frame staying close throughout. Down 19-11, the Bulldogs closed the gap as Aaron Brody (Webster, Mass.) put together a stretch of points and Holdjer DeCarvalho (Fall River, Mass.) and Jaren Brooks (Odessa, Texas) delivered kills to close the hosts to within four at 23-19.nIt was not meant to be for Dean, however, as the Lions put the game away with the final two points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Brody paced the Bulldog offense with four kills, while chipping in three blocks. John Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) totaled seven digs and Chadd Pelletier (Westbrook, Maine) handed out three assists.
Dean is off until Tuesday when they host Pine Manor. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
