Powered by standout performances from a host of individuals, Dean College swept a pair of matches from York College on Saturday afternoon, topping the Cardinals by a 3-0 score in game one and a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
Diondre Gomes (Fairhaven, Mass.) had 25 kills in the two matches, while Joel Carmona (Lawrence, Mass.) totaled eight kills in the opener and then Moussa Seck (Malden, Mass.) posted a season-best ten kills in the second match.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN MATCH 1:
The afternoon began with the Bulldogs racing to an opening set 25-10 triumph as they buried nine kills, took advantage of five York attack errors and hit .615 in the frame.
Things were a little closer in the second set with Dean getting the 25-21 victory as they continued their hot hitting, recording 12 kills in the frame and using eight Cardinal miscues to secure the win.
In the third set, the Bulldogs sprinted out to a 7-1 lead forcing a York timeout. That lead ballooned to 15-4 after another Gomes hammer.
Moments later, the Cardinals made their push getting as close as 19-15, following a solo block from Mambe Koureissi.
Dean, however, put the match away with six of the final eight points, highlighted by a Bobby Tetreault (Mattapoisett, Mass.) service ace, a pair of Carmona kills and another stellar serve from Gomes.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN MATCH 2:
York came out and played an inspired brand of volleyball that found them all square with the Bulldogs at 18-18 in the opening set.
Dean scored three straight points and then York ran off three in a row of their own to even the score at 21-21.
A service error from the Cardinals and then an ace from the Bulldogs' Aaron Brody (Webster, Mass.) had Dean in great shape, but York wouldn't go away and tied the score at 24-24.
The set was tied at 25-25 and at 26-26 before the Cardinals took the set, 28-26.
Dean reasserted itself over the next three sets, taking control in the second set with a 25-17 win to even the match.
The third set also went to the Bulldogs by a 25-15 score and in the fourth set, Dean raced out to an 11-2 lead and saw their advantage balloon to 21-7.
York closed the gap to 23-12 but a Gabe McClain (Los Angeles, Calif.) service ace and a Cardinal hitting error wrapped up the afternoon.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN MATCH 1:
Gomes ended with 14 kills and Carmona added eight more, while Tetreault doled out 26 assists and had six of the team's 11 service aces.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS IN MATCH 2:
Carmona finished with five kills, five digs and five service aces, while Tetreault ended with 21 assists, four kills and six digs.
The Bulldogs will return to the hardwood when they play host to Newbury College on Tuesday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m.
