THE LEAD:
Mitchell College scored a pair of goals less than seven minutes apart and the visiting Mariners delivered a shocking upset, handing previously undefeated Dean College their first loss, a 2-0 decision in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game was scoreless midway through the second half when James Shea took a free kick and sent it over to William Ferguson, who headed home the match's first goal into the far right corner at 61:22.

That lead doubled in the 69th minute when David Hernandez connected with Jose Roman III for an insurance strike at 68:09.

Dean had its best scoring chance of the afternoon early in the second half when Pepe Vieira (Brockton, Mass.) saw his shot ring off the crossbar The rebound went to Sam Fonseca (Fogo, Cape Verde) but his bid the break the scoreless tie was gobbled up by Mitchell netminder Seth Shader.

The defeat for the Bulldogs comes after they held a 16-5 edge in shots and their defense continued its stellar play, holding the visitors without a shot in the first half. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The stunning defeat for the Cardinal and White snaps their 14-match winning streak that began last season, puts an end to their eight-match home winning streak and is the first time they have been shutout in 21 matches.
