Southern Vermont closed the game on a 27-5 run, erasing an eight point Bulldog lead to earn a 77-63 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory on Thursday in Bennington, Vt.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A low scoring first half featured tightly contested action, with neither team leading by more than six. Armani Baker (Pawtucket, R.I.) opened the scoring with a layup in the opening minutes as the teams traded buckets for the first 11 minutes. A three pointer from Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) with eight and a half minutes remaining gave the Bulldogs their largest first half lead at 16-12, but the advantage was short lived.
Southern Vermont scored eight straight points to turn a four point deficit into a four point lead with 4:39 remaining in the half. The Mountaineers extended their lead to 25-19 two minutes later, but Dean rallied to close the half. Two layups from Booker squeezed the gap to 29-27 at the break.
A jumper from Josh Croskey (Union, N.J.) tied the game at 29 in the opening minutes of the second half. Southern Vermont controlled the next four minutes, building a 40-31 lead after a Andre Hodo three pointer. Layups from Booker and Dayvon Russell (Naugatuck, Conn.) narrowed the deficit back to three five minutes through the frame.
With under ten minutes to play, Dean took its first lead of the second half on back-to-back layups from Baker. With eight minutes remaining, Dean extended its lead to eight with a layup from Booker and a triple from Randolf Thurman (Swampscott, Mass.).
The Mountaineers answered with a 15-5 run to knot the score at 63 with 3:50 on the clock. Dean would not score again. Southern Vermont scored the game's final 14 points to walk away with a 77-63 win.
