A 22-3 New England College run broke open a tie game late in the first half, and the Pilgirms used the momentum to cruise to a 82-57 victory over the Dean College Bulldogs in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action in Henniker, N.H. on Tuesday.
The loss is the Bulldogs' second straight, dropping their record to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in the league. NEC improves to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dean came off the bus in the groove, racing out to a 6-0 lead and controlling play for the first ten minutes of action. Tied at 20 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half, New England College found their stride, ripping off the aforementioned 22-3 run and earning a 17 point lead (42-25) going into the halftime break.
A three pointer from Randolf Thurman (Swampscott, Mass.) and a layup from Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) closed the gap early in the second half, but the Pilgirms rallied instantly, balooning the lead back to 22 before Dean took a timeout.
After trading barbs throughout the middle part of the period, Dean got two free throws from Booker and a triple from Dayvon Russell (Naugatuck, Conn.) to cut the lead to 14 with four and a half minutes remaining. NEC stepped on the gas down the stretch, outscoring the Bulldogs over the final four minutes to put the finishing touches on the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Russell led the Bulldogs with 15 points on 5-15 shooting while adding eight rebounds and five assists. Booker and Thurman both played more than 35 minutes and finished with 12 points.
Dean hosts the University of New England on Thursday at Pieri Gym in Franklin, Mass. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
